Does this sound familiar? You’ve got an important event coming up, and that twinge you felt in your tooth a couple of weeks ago has turned into a full-blown, throbbing toothache.

Dental emergencies come in all shapes and sizes, but the team at Dewey Dental knows they all have one thing in common – you need relief, and you need it now!

When Is a Problem an Emergency?

Nobody has to tell you that tooth pain is an emergency that you need to take care of immediately. But what about others that aren’t as critical? How do you know when it’s time to alert your dentist?

The answer is that Dr. Nathan Bulleigh and our team want to know about anything out of the ordinary that affects either the comfort or function of your teeth.

Here are some of the most common dental emergencies we treat:

  • Tooth pain
  • Lost or broken filling
  • Loose or broken dental crowns
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Broken or cracked dentures

Some of the procedures we use to address these problems are:

  • Tooth-colored fillings
  • Root canals
  • Extractions
  • Re-cement a crown back in place
  • Replace a knocked-out tooth

When Is an Emergency Critical?

We want to know about anything that concerns you, but how do you know if you should drop everything and go to the dentist or if it’s okay to wait a couple of days?

The most critical of all dental emergencies is a knocked-out tooth because we only have a few hours in which we can successfully place it back in the socket. Until you can get to our office, handle the tooth by the crown only and keep the root moist in a cup of milk, water, or saliva. If your tooth loss involves injury to your jaw or face or excessive bleeding, please go to the emergency room or call 911.

Another emergency that needs immediate attention is tooth pain so severe that you cannot function. Tooth pain is never healthy, and an extreme toothache is a sign that there’s a severe problem with the tooth that needs to be treated right away to relieve your pain and save the tooth.

How You Can Avoid Emergencies

Some dental emergencies are unavoidable. But you can minimize your risk for smaller emergencies by taking good care of your teeth at home and visiting your Dewey general dentist for routine exams and dental cleanings every six months.

These visits not only help us prevent or treat decay and disease that causes pain, but Dr. Bulleigh will also check the condition of crowns and fillings to make sure they’re in good shape.

We don’t ever want you to sit and worry about whether or not you should call us. If it concerns you, it concerns us, and we’re always happy to take your call. We allow time in our schedule for emergencies, and we will arrange to see you as quickly as possible, usually the same day.
